Join Our Gardening Volunteers at Backhouse Rossie

Our volunteers don’t just love gardening—they love the peaceful escape of listening to birdsong, breathing in the fresh air, and being in nature with like-minded people. Volunteering here is about more than just plants; it’s about feeling social, having fun and enjoying a mid-morning tea or coffee, and sharing plenty of laughter along the way.

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting out, volunteering at Backhouse Rossie is a fantastic opportunity to be part of the garden’s regeneration, meet like-minded people, and enjoy the satisfaction of making a real impact.

Why Volunteer With Us?

  • A variety of tasks for all skill levels – whether you’re planting, pruning, or maintaining garden spaces, there’s always something rewarding to do.
  • Regular tea breaks with plenty of friendly chat and a free coffee at our café.
  • Learn new gardening techniques or share your skills with others in a relaxed and supportive environment.
  • Be part of the journey in developing and maintaining a beautiful, historic garden.

What Does Volunteering Involve?

Volunteers play a key role in helping us maintain and enhance the gardens and grounds. You don’t need any prior experience—just a love of nature, fresh air, and a willingness to get involved!

Since gardening is seasonal, the tasks vary depending on the time of year. If you join us between May and September, your activities may include:

  • Lawn care – mowing, edging, and keeping the grounds looking pristine.
  • Glasshouse work – nurturing conservatory plants and growing seasonal fruits and vegetables.
  • Vegetable & fruit gardening – helping with biodynamic food production, including strawberries, raspberries, apples, and more.
  • Flower border maintenance – caring for herbaceous and cut flower borders.
  • Hedge trimming & woodland care – assisting with tree work and woodland management.
  • Compost making & bulb propagation – contributing to the sustainability of our gardens.
  • Caring for the National Heritage Collection of Daffodils – helping to preserve a unique part of horticultural history.

Your Safety Comes First

At Backhouse Rossie, volunteer safety is our priority.

Training is provided for all equipment and tasks | A full Risk Assessment is conducted before each job | You will never be asked to do anything you’re not comfortable with or beyond your abilities.
