Here at Backhouse Rossie Estate, we are proud to continue her legacy by preserving the National Collection of Narcissus Backhouse cultivars, including the first true pink daffodil.
A Pioneer in Horticulture
Sarah Backhouse was a remarkable plantswoman, working alongside her husband, Robert Ormston Backhouse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At a time when plant hybridisation was a slow and meticulous process, Sarah excelled in the field, dedicating herself to the development of new daffodil varieties.
Sarah’s most well known achievements were her giant Leedsii daffodils, the breathtaking red cups, and her celebrated namesake Narcissus ‘Mrs RO Backhouse’ the first solid pink cup division 2 cultivar registered in the UK. Tragically, Sarah passed away in 1921 before her achievement could be widely recognised, and it was her husband Robert who named the daffodil in her honour in 1923.
Rediscovering Sarah’s Legacy
For decades, Sarah’s contribution to daffodil hybridisation was largely overshadowed. However, thanks to recent research by the RHS Lindley Library, her achievements are finally receiving the recognition they deserve. Today, she is rightly acknowledged as a leading figure in early daffodil breeding, a woman whose work laid the foundations for many modern cultivars.
