When you’re looking for a refreshing break, the Backhouse Kitchen is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a delicious meal. Whether you prefer to sit in or take away, we offer a delightful selection of seasonal dishes made with home-grown ingredients from our very own garden. With free parking and no garden entry required, it’s an easy stop for a bite to eat.
We take great pride in serving signature Backhouse Rossie dishes, crafted from locally sourced ingredients and home-grown vegetables, herbs, soft fruit, and berries. From apples, pears, and medlar, to quince, we use the best of what our garden has to offer. Our seasonally changing menu also features apple juice, preserves, bakes, and a variety of other dishes reflecting the natural flavours of the land.
Relax and enjoy barista-made organic fair trade coffee, a tempting selection of loose-leaf teas, and indulgent hot chocolates in a cosy atmosphere. Choose to dine indoors at tables made from estate beech wood, dating back to the 1860s, or sit outdoors on our patio, offering stunning views of the surrounding woodland—an ideal spot for your coffee, lunch, or tea on a sunny day.
Free Wi-Fi is available for those wishing to relax and enjoy their meal. We welcome well-behaved dogs on the patio but kindly ask that they remain outside the gardens and Walled Garden.

At the Backhouse Kitchen, we focus on simple, earthy ingredients that highlight the natural flavours of the season. Our dishes are inspired by the beauty of our surroundings, with barley harvested from our west field milled and baked into some of our bakery products. We also source supplies from trusted local businesses to ensure the highest quality ingredients in every meal.

We are open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday and closed Tuesdays & Saturdays, with last orders at 3:30 pm.

We talk about food yards, not miles. Plough to plate has always been a part of how we do things here.
Our Apple Juice comes from our own heritage apples from the walled garden, blended with local apples to make a sweet tasty juice, cold pressed and with only a pinch of Vitamin C added. Our other supplies come from trusted local business.
If we feel good about producing it, you will feel good when you enjoy it.
