BACKHOUSE ROSSIE

OUR COMMITMENT

Nature | Heritage | Sustainability

We are committed to preserving the estate’s rich history while promoting environmental stewardship through traditional land management practices. Our focus on conservation, including the planting of native trees and creating wildlife corridors, ensures that the estate thrives as a haven for wildlife and visitors alike. We aim to foster a connection between people, nature, and history, providing a peaceful, sustainable space for education, relaxation, and the enjoyment of Fife’s natural beauty.

The Farm

Nestled in peaceful, green surroundings, Rossie Home Farm boasts fields adorned with spring blossoms, autumn berries, and an abundance of wildlife. These tranquil landscapes frame the historic walled garden and our welcoming café, creating a serene escape for all who visit.

Our thriving red squirrel population is supported by new tree plantings that connect the estate’s established woodlands, with the ground beneath them covered in vibrant daffodils each spring.

The café menu features home-grown vegetables, fruits, and berries when in season, showcasing the best of what the farm has to offer. For a special memento of your visit, you can also purchase products from our Backhouse Pantry, including jams, jellies, chutneys, balsamic vinegar, and our premium apple juice.

The Backhouse Kitchen

The family-run Backhouse Kitchen takes pride in using our own home-grown vegetables, herbs, soft fruit, and berries, along with apples, pears, medlar, and quince. We also source local ingredients to create apple juice, preserves, bakes, and our seasonally changing signature dishes. We very much believe in FOOD METRES NOT MILES.

Indulge in barista-quality coffee, a tempting selection of teas, and enjoy your meal in our comfortable seating area, either inside or outside. Inside, the tables are crafted from a fallen beech tree from the estate, dated to the 1860s. Alternatively, relax on the patio with stunning views of the woodland—a perfect spot to enjoy your coffee, lunch, or tea on a sunny day.

Our home-grown vegetables, fruit, and berries are featured in the Café menu when in season. You can also take a piece of Rossie Estate home with you by purchasing from our Backhouse Pantry, which offers jams, jellies, chutneys, balsamic vinegar, and top-quality apple juice.

Wildlife & Nature

At Backhouse Rossie Estate, we are dedicated to supporting a rich and thriving ecosystem. Our carefully cultivated plants and trees attract a variety of pollinators, including butterflies and bees, contributing to the vibrant wildlife that calls our estate home.

Over the past decade, wildlife corridors planted with native trees have connected established woodlands, creating vital habitats for red squirrels, native animals, and a diverse range of plants. A notable highlight of our woodland is the Scarlet Elf Cup (Sarcoscypha austriaca), found on a fallen, moss-covered branch in the damp shade of the forest floor. Its striking red cups provide a beautiful contrast against the green moss—an eye-catching burst of colour in the heart of the woods.

The estate is also home to some incredible bird sightings, including the Shore Lark, Green-winged Teal, and the elusive American Wigeon. We are proud to be ranked among the top five sites in Fife for Lepidoptera identification, with over 400 recorded species of butterflies and moths spotted across our grounds.

At Backhouse Rossie, we are committed to fostering a thriving natural environment and sharing its wonders with all who visit.

A Traditionally Managed Estate in the Heart Of Fife

Surrounded by the peaceful, rolling countryside of central Fife, Backhouse Rossie Estate has been traditionally managed to preserve its natural beauty and foster a thriving ecosystem. Surrounded by stunning views, the estate is a haven of tranquillity, blending heritage, horticulture, and nature in perfect harmony.

In our commitment to conservation, we’ve planted new plantations of native trees to create vital wildlife corridors that link our ancient woodlands. These corridors provide essential habitats for a diverse range of species, including the iconic red squirrels, native animals, and a variety of birds. Our focus on native biodiversity ensures that these habitats are suited to the local flora and fauna, supporting the estate’s long-term ecological health.

Through these efforts, we aim to enhance the estate’s natural landscape, encourage wildlife to flourish, and preserve the environment for generations to come. Backhouse Rossie Estate is not only a beautiful setting for visitors to enjoy but also an important sanctuary for nature in the heart of Fife.
